Yang dimaksud non-essential adjective clause adalah klausa yang memberikan informasi tambahan tentang kata benda atau kata ganti yang dimodifikasi, namun informasi tersebut tidak esensial untuk memahami gagasan utama dalam kalimat. Adjective tidak bisa direduksi ketika: relative pronoun diikuti oleh subjeknya.

Contoh:
Do you know the girl whom I was talking to in your party?

Penjelasan:
“whom” = Relative pronoun
“I” = Subjek dari adjective clause
“was” = to be (helping verb)
“talking” = Present Participle
Adjective clause seperti di atas tidak bisa kita reduksi. Adapun contoh kalimat lain yang tidak bisa kita reduksi, yaitu:
The man whose bike you are usingis my neighbor
I can’t betray a person whom I love

Adjective tidak bisa direduksi ketika: adjective clauses dimulai dengan kata ganti relatif (relative pronouns) dan beberapa kata keterangan relatif (relative adverbs) seperti: whom, whose, where, why, dan when.

Contoh:

The reason why she is with you is because you have a lot of money
I know a place where he can hide
Everyone wants to see whom you got married with
etc.

Kita tidak bisa mereduksi adjective clause di atas karena klausa tersebut diawali dengan kata ganti atau keterangan yang disebutkan di atas, dan memiliki subjek dari klausa sifat setelahnya.

#1 Adjective Clause menjadi Adjective

Ketika adjective clause direduksi menjadi adjective (dengan ketentuan menjadi satu kata), adjective tersebut biasanya selalu ditempatkan sebelum kata benda (noun) yang telah dimodifikasi.

Sentence: The boy who was disabledwon the match
Reduced Sentence: The disabled boy won the match

Catatan penting:
Jika adjective clause diikuti oleh kata apapun setelah adjective-nya, maka kita tidak dapat mereduksinya menjadi satu adejctive. Klausa tersebut akan menjadi Adjective phrase (adjective + modifier) dan kita tidak akan dapat menempatkannya sebelum kata benda (noun) yang dimodifikasi.
